Description
Escif's ‘Tots a una veu’ is a powerful painting that combines symbolic elements with a message of communal solidarity. It depicts a group of people working together to push what looks like a giant brush, a visual metaphor for collective effort and cooperation. This concept aligns with the slogan ‘Tots a una veu’ (All with one voice), used as a symbol of unity and resilience in the Valencian Community.
This work also has a thematic connection with the recent devastating effects of the DANA (Isolated High Level Depression) that occurred in October 2024 in Spain, specifically in the Valencian Community. This climatic phenomenon brought massive flooding and extensive damage, highlighting environmental vulnerability and the importance of community collaboration for recovery and reconstruction in the face of natural disasters. The slogan resonates as a call for unity in the face of such adversity, reflecting how Valencians have worked together in times of crisis, from torrential rains to rebuilding after historic catastrophes.
Escif (b. 1980)
Escif (Valencia 1980) is an ‘artivist’, a painter and a muralist.
His work focuses mainly on the re-signification of the city, based on the statement that life will always be more interesting than art. With a sharp drawing of clear lines and sober colors, his murals question the current struggles, the resistance movements, the challenges of capitalism and the environmental problems that cloud our time. Sometimes his paintings are presented as minimal gestures that break into reality, to remind us of the beauty of everything that surrounds us.
Active in the street-art scene since late 90s, much of his work has been developed in Valencia, his hometown. Even so, he has carried out a large number of international projects in urban contexts around the world, always in direct contact with the public and the reality of the context.
In recent years we can highlight his interventions in art centers such as Power Station museum in Shanghai (China, 2016), IVAM museum (Valencia, 2017), Palais de Tokyo museum (Paris, 2018), CCCC museum (Valencia, 2020); or his participation in events such as the Biennial of Contemporary African Art (Dakar, 2014), OFF Manifesta X (Saint Petersburg 2014), in "Dismaland" project organized by Banksy in Weston-super-Mare (England, 2015), the Lyon Biennial (France, 2019) or Beyond the Streets in collaboration with Saatchi Gallery (London, 2023) and Perrotin (Shangai, 2023).
