Description
Origen is an exploration of abstraction as a language that transcends time, a bridge between the ancestral and the contemporary. The work uses clay collected from different geographies of Central America, set on a PVC base, to question narratives of history and cultural memory. In this crossing of the natural and the industrial, the archaic and the modern, Origen proposes an archaeological fiction of the present, where abstract forms become artefacts that could have been unearthed from an imagined future, suggesting the idea that abstraction itself has deep roots, linked to forgotten traditions.
Cisco Merel (b. 1981)
Cisco Merel is an artist living and working in Panama. For more than 10 years, he collaborated closely with the workshop of renowned master Carlos Cruz Diez. Merel uses abstraction as a means to address different themes in his work, such as architecture, social contrasts and popular art. In his work, he seeks to rescue the origins of the constructive and socio-cultural systems that surround us in contemporary times.
Merel uses photography, painting, sculpture and installations as a starting point to create a visual and investigative map in each project he develops. His work stands out for his ability to transform everyday experiences into something exceptional and for his ability to generate reflections on culture and society.
